Random Act of Kindness 3

This time the act of kindness is definitely involved, but you might question its randomness... and well, that's your prerogative - you can do what you want to do - it's your prerogative. (Bobby Brown - WATCH OUT)

This story will require some background info ... You see I went to college at a very small liberal arts school in central Texas. It's about half the size of my high school w/around 1300 students. (I know... DAAAAAAMN, that's small)

Pretty much everyone knew each other, and if not you'd at least know some good gossip on them. For a Post Office, we had a small little office that was housed in our Cafeteria. Everyone shared a mailbox w/another student. My "Box Mate" was Brooke B. Our boxes were super old school - but the best part was that they had a little tiny window that you could use to peek into your box w/out actually having to open it.

At the end of my sophomore year they tore down the Cafeteria so that they could build a brand new Student Center. And in the new building would be the new Post Office. The new Post Office would be large enough for every student to have their own mail box. Which ended up sucking for me because Brooke B. ended up getting to keep our box number because her last name started with a "B" and mine only a "C". That's probably the first and only time that has ever happened to me. I mean COME ON - my last name starts w/a friggin' "C" people - I should be SET! It's bullshit. Psh.. whatever. (Hmmm, bitter, much?)

Anyway, so I had to change my checks, contact all my friends, family, and of course the bill collectors - let 'em know about the address change.

One of the people who worked for the Post Office was named Faye. She is probably one of the sweetest old ladies I've ever known. She's easily 70-something, total "Grandma"-type. One of the coolest things about Faye was that she knew practically EVERYONE at our school. You could go up to her and toss out a name and chances are she would know exactly who they were and/or what their box # was. That was pretty cool. I even remember quizzing her one day.

So one afternoon - I got a notice in my box that I had a package. Packages are like pure gold in college, so basically, I'm already stoked before even getting it. I go to the window - greet Faye and say...
Me: I have a package Faye! WOO HOO! (Yes, I said WOO HOO! You got a problem with that??!! Huh, do ya? Do ya?)
Faye: Here you go sweetie (handing me the small box). I hope you like it, but keep it a secret, because I don't want anyone to get their feelings hurt.
Me: (what the hell is she talking about?) Uh, sure, okay Faye. See ya.

I think I got about 10 steps away before I started ripping into the box. I quickly opened it and inside was a small ziploc bag w/ a key and some tiny screws inside. And with it was a very old, but very familiar post office box door. It seems Faye had saved my old box door (still had my old box # stickered on it)from demolition and had given it to me.

I was so amazed. I couldn't believe she had done that. I immediately turned around and went back to see her. I just walked right up to her, opened my arms, and hugged her as tightly as I could. I whispered "Thank you", hugged her again and left.

We all have control over what we choose to remember or hold onto in this world... Personally, I don't think it should be the fights, or the arguments, not the stupid inconsequential times someone may hurt our feelings - what we should cherish are those very special and unique times when someone (whether it be a friend, an acquaintance, or even a complete stranger) does or says something to you that was meant with only true kindness in mind. For those my friends, are the moments that are going to make your day - may even your life.

Yes, I get an alert on ALL my comments. I just don't necessarily comment on all my comments. Should I?
