Oh, it's okay my best friend is...

Have you ever heard that before?

It is usually said right after a derogatory comment made by someone about someone else - whether it be about their gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, hair color, disability, etc.

Yeah, that kinda shit really pisses me off. Like that makes it okay to be a bigot/prejudiced against others.

It makes me want to just turn around and ask them...

"Oh, so your Blonde Mexican-American Lesbian Paraplegic Blind best friend is completely cool with you making that comment?"

Something tells me the answer would not be "Yes." But hey - what can ya do? There are ignorant people everywhere.

Hey. It's okay, one of my best friends is stupid. So I can say that.

;)

So true.
People do this a lot don't they?!

Question tho...why is okay for ummm let's say 'black' ppl to use the N word to each other, but white folk can't drop the N bomb? On the flip side, why can they say to me: "get your cracker ass in gear" and that's okay? Is it because my lily white honky ass probably won't do anything and they know that?

Just saying..not that I want to use any derogatory term! (and I realize I used a few here..but it's okay. I'm white.)

Anyway - to answer you Sass... I think PART of the reason is because of ownership. I mean, it's okay for us to call our parents/family/significant others a bitch/asshole/fuckface - but if someone else does it - it's like "OH NO YOU DI'NT!"

Besides, w/racial slurs, it's sort of a power thing. Kinda hard to get into, but either way it's never "okay" to use. At least not technically.

I get your point. The other day I heard a good/bad one and I'm not sure what to do with it...was actually a nice reminder that this is exactly the type of joke I avoid FOR A REASON: Here it is: Delete if you will...

What do you call a black pilot?...
..........A PILOT you fucking bigot.

The first time I heard it, I can recall thinking frantically for a snappy comeback that WOULD divert the offensive comment OR figure out the punchline before the idiot actually blurted it out. It's a brutal reminder that we actually DO have some bad thoughts in there somewhere that we rarely acknowledge, which means we PRETEND we don't have these crappy prejudices when they're not gone, just stifled... Quick update, though: I'm not blonde - dyed it red last week - and I'm JEWISH. Get it right. =)
