I can't believe it's already Wednesday.
Everything just seems to be moving in hyper-speed these days. Of course, I am on one side of the situation - you know the side that includes clean water, food, shelter, etc... and there are hundreds of thousands on the other side - the side that includes pain, exhaustion, hunger, thirst, and ultimately fear. These are thoughts that bring tears to my eyes on a daily basis.
I am a part of this - my city is a part of this - my friends are a part of this. Everything is different now.
I live in San Antonio, Texas - and it is approximately 70% brown (Mexi). The similarities to New Orleans are pretty eerie. Both cities are rich in cultural history and knee deep in ethnic minorities and high poverty levels. Qualities (well, except for the high poverty rate) that I have really loved about that city from the first moment I laid eyes on it. It is not too far of a stretch to consider that had it been San Antonio that was hit as hard as New Orleans, that we too might have been as thoroughly screwed over by our government and President - and for the worst reason why - because of the color of our skin.
I'm sure there are many who think that I am just grasping at straws. And that race isn't always an issue and it might not even be the issue in this case. But you are kidding yourself (all the while you keep your eyes closed tightly) if you don't think that parts of the MEDIA have portrayed Black Americans poorly during this tragedy.
Despite everything though, over the weekend I was able to focus on pleasant and good things. Like the wedding of my friend Beth to her new husband Chris.
YAY!
I wish I had some really cool and/or funny stories - but not too much happened. Well, apart from a bridesmaid fainting during the vows and a friend of the bride's getting pelted in the face w/the bouquet after warning us that she had no intention of catching it (of course after it smacked her in the face - she let it just roll on down to the floor, but that's neither here nor there...). And of course my subsequent buzz from all the homemade brew (yup!) and open bar.
Aaaah, "open bar", how I love you so! Let me count the drinks... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, (hehe, I COULD keep going, but I won't).
Speaking of drinks - wanna impress the ladies/fellas next time you are at the bar and you want a Rum and Coke? Order a Cuba Libre (WITH the accent).
Apparently that is a Rum and Coke w/Lime.
It is MUY DELICIOSO! And you can sound cool at the same time.
"Cuuuuba Liiiibre!"
Damn that's hot!
