So it seems I have picked up a bad habit recently. But ya know what - I don't know if I'm completely sold on its degree of "bad".
Apparently I say "crap" a lot. Now, I agree, "crap" certainly COULD be considered a "bad word" in certain contexts, but overall, I would say it's pretty harmless.
This became an issue tonight while I was over at my parents' house (my usual Sunday activity) enjoying a nice family dinner, when my mom mentioned that I say "crap" a lot and that I should "really watch my language".
Of course, my first reaction was to say "Ring. Ring. Hello, Pot? This is Kettle. You're black!" but I decided not to go that route and instead went with "what's so bad about saying 'crap'? It's not as though it's a 'bad word'."
Ah, yes, but is it?
I mean "crap" could be used as another word for "stuff". As in, "I have crap all over the floor." Translation: "I believe I have left a few items on the floor."
And sure, I suppose it could be another word for "shit" or even "fuck". For example, "I have to take a crap." Or the equally interchangeable, "I don't give a crap". Either way, if given the choice, I believe most people would prefer to hear "crap" over "fuck" or "shit". I know I would.
But it gets worse. You see, my mom is not the first to mention my new habit. My boss at work has recently been teasing me on my "foul language". Specifically my over-use of the word "crap".
Again, I just don't truly see the harm. I don't know. Maybe I am the victim of too much violence on TV. Too many MTV videos. Too much rap music. I don't know.
But I will say this (to those of you who agree with my mom on this one) - You can just go crap yourself, ya mothercrapper!

Crap was the worst thing we could say as kids around my mom. I guess when my grandfather (who never cursed) got really mad he would say crap. My mother said if you heard the word crap someone was in big trouble. (and please don't get the wrong idea, my grandfather did not beat anyone.) Maybe your mom has the same weird word association.
My favorite word is retard or retarded. It doesn't go over well in work meetings. As in, "that idea is retarded."
She admitted her "word" was "stupid". Apparently her father did not approve of it.
