Next time sometime someone tells you ... "Well, times were tough." They are actually telling you that they used to sell their bodies or "services" for money (or equivalent... maybe cookies, donuts, crack rock, crystal meth, booze, gummi bears, etc.).
It's not pretty, but it is true.
