Last week my little cousin (okay, so he's not actually little. Technically, he's taller than me AND 18, but old habits die hard I guess.) graduated from high school.
The ceremony was at the dome. The Alamo Dome (how original.).
There were several members of the fam there to support him. Probably about 12 or so of us.
One of the good things about my cousin is that we share the same last name, so we knew to look for him up in the front. This is important because the boy graduated in a class of at least 450 students!
Anyway, so we settled into our seats.
Someone had nachos.
Someone else had a beer.
(Hey, this IS Texas after all.)
And so it began. We screamed and giggled and waved like German David Hasselhoff fans the minute we saw him marching to his seat. Thankfully he saw us pretty quickly and waved back otherwise I'm sure we would have kept waving like idiots just to get his attention.
Several minutes (possibly an hour, I don't know. I passed out from boredom at one point.) passed - some boring people talked and then the main event began. We anxiously waited - again waving our arms like trained monkeys when he walked by us, following the line to the stage.
This was it.
He was on stage.
Our hands were poised for some serious clapping. Someone had a fog horn and my other cousin was ready to throw confetti in the air. We saw him on stage... waiting for his name to be called to go forward...
He walked to the front of the stage and then we heard...
"Michael Chavez."
And we all paused... turned to each other and said "Who???"
You see. My little cousin's name is Matthew.
THEY FUCKED UP HIS NAME!
At his HS graduation!!
We were all really pissed; but mostly we all just felt so bummed for Matt.
He's such a good kid. I know I felt bad. I mean, come one. That sucks! In fact, I think I was so thrown off by the whole "Michael" part that I don't even remember clapping, let alone screaming for him.
We tried to laugh it off for Matt's sake, but it was a messed up situation and I wish it hadn't happened.
Anyway, that being the case, let's all give a mad SHOUT OUT (HOLLA'!) to O'Connor's coolest '06 grad - Matthew Chavez! Love you kiddo!

But he now has a great story to tell over beers with his buddies for years. (I mean when he can drink legally.)
That's awful..you think they'd be able to get his name right for crying out loud!
Congrats to Matthew tho!
Saw him over the weekend and he seemed okay with it. But yeah, I think you called it. It will ultimately be just one of those stories that you share w/buddies over a few beers.
